In prisons nationwide, correctional officers or turnkeys as they are called, face numerous temptations everytime they come to work. With prisoners opearting extensive contraband and drug smuggling rings on the inside, saturating the prisons black market with items such as cellphones, tobacco, marijuana, heroin and Oxycotin, they turn to prison guards to bring the contraband items in, often offering them exhoberent amounts of money to mule the items into the institution.
"Any hack can be bought," a prisoner tells us. "Everybody has their price. We are all human beings after all. To find a willing guard you just have to talk to them, become friendly, find out about their life. Like if they are living comfortably or if they are in debt and have a lot of bills." By getting to know the C/O's, prisoners find ways to manipulate them and money is a strong deciding factor making bribes very common.
"If I find a C/0 who is behind on their bills I will work that to my advantage," the prisoner says. "I'll tell them, hey I know an easy way you can get money. Bring me a carton of smokes and I'll giv eyou $250.00, bring me an ounce of weed and I'll give you $500.00, bring me a cell phone and I'll give you $300.00. You put it out there and give them options and let them decide."
Bribing officers is so common that the federal Bureau of Prisons has designated incident report codes for it, Code 216, as printed above. These are 200 series shots in the moderate to high category which is the second most severe level of charges a prisoner can be written in prison.
"Thats why you got to be sure of the financial situation of the C/0 you are speaking with," the prisoner says. "If not they can trap you off and write you a shot." Anytime a prisoner tries to make a bribe he is playing with fire but the chance is worth it because the money to be made is staggering.
