A lot of prisoners will do what they call "take a vacation" and purposely go to "the hole" to smuggle drugs in by kiestering the contraband. "Let’s say my homeboy is in the hole and I know he is fiending or sends a kite out saying he needs some dope," a convict tells me. "I will get something, wrap it up in cellophane and kiester it. Then I will go cuss the Lieutenant out at mainline or something like that so that I can get locked up."
Prisoners know what they have to do to provoke staff into exercising their authority. Any type of insolence directed toward staff in front of other inmates is a sure fire method to get thrown in the "the hole." It is a minor infraction, which will keep the prisoner in SHU for a week or less. Prisoners manipulate the system to get staff to throw them into "the hole" for all types of reasons: to communicate with an inmate locked up for investigation, to get to a prisoner they need to step to or handle and to bring drugs into their homeboys.
"My man was going to the hole for a dirty," the convict says. "We knew he was going any day now. So we put together a package of tobacco and weed for him to take in to the homies on lockdown. When they called him to the Lieutenants office to lock him up e had the package ready, but we forgot to put the batteries in it. They use batteries and metallic strips to fire up the smoke. We wrapped two AA batteries on the outside of the cylinder package and when my man saw it he freaked out because he knew he had to kiester that shit. It looked like a submarine with two missiles on it. But homie took one for the team that day and kiestered that joint. The homies on lockdown were getting high that night." Prisoners will go to all extremes to find ways to get high, smuggling drugs in their body cavities and taking trips to 24 hour lockdown to facilitate a move.
